Jane said of the process of creating a painting:

"... visual inspiration comes from defaced and abandoned objects from present day urban settings, and from archaeological sites and artefacts.

I set out to depict an accretion of past experiences, which are half hidden and half revealed. Past, present and future - a process of continuous evolution, a journey we all are part of.

During the complex process of creating a painting, the surface is built up, then progressively obliterated. Paint is dripped, thrown, splashed, stroked and brushed onto the canvas in a seemingly random yet controlled way. Previous images are left partially exposed during an extended process of doing, undoing and re-doing. The finished work resonates with hints of previous histories and experiences."

Jane Spencer wrote of herself as a Ceramic Artist:

"The context of my work is the ritual object. I explore this concept by referring to different cultural traditions, and their search for the transcendent through the creation and use of specific sacred objects. These can be, to give just a few examples; shrines, grave goods, spirit houses, miniature temples, sacred vessels, obelisks and sun disks.

I recently created a series of 'roadside shrines', and a group of pots based on West African 'butabu' (adobe) Islamic architecture. [Much recent] work is concerned with the obelisk. The archetypal origin of the obelisk is the sacred mound - the 'axis mundi', and the tree of life. It has also been interpreted as a scintilla - a beam of sunlight transmuted into stone.

I collect, photograph or draw these objects [the sources of visual inspiration] then subvert them to create a sense of ambiguity and mystery in the form and surface of my pieces. I like to explore contrasts, opposites and paradoxes through my work."

Jane wrote in 2006:

"Extensive exhibiting experience has included six solo shows during the last five years. Commissions have also been undertaken for a variety of projects.

My work can be found in domestic, corporate and healthcare settings. I am passionately committed to the concept of visual art as a catalyst for healing and wholeness, and have worked with a number of NHS Trusts creating site-specific paintings."
